I’d happily sleep in a cardboard box if it meant getting to experience tropical beaches, sea and sun, but thankfully in Mauritius I don’t have to. This island paradise in the Indian Ocean boasts lots of fabulous places to stay, and there are plenty of cheap flights to Mauritius in 2013 too.
One of the things to think about when you’re booking accommodation on this Mascarene Island is where you want to base yourself. Mauritius is awash with beautiful beaches, historic sites and lush scenery all around the island, but it’s hard to discard the capital Port Louis, Africa’s wealthiest city.
If you want to see some of the most attractive white sand beaches, head to the east, whereas if you’re with the family, the calm waters of the west coast are the ideal destination. However, if I could pick a favourite area, I’d go for the south of the island, which is greener and wilder.
Resort-wise, Mauritius exudes style, with a wide range of luxury hotels to enjoy all the pleasures of life. For example, you can check out the One&Only Le Saint Géran on the Belle Mare peninsula in the east. Located in a sheltered lagoon it is the perfect place to be pampered, with its spacious suites with views over the ocean.
But if you’re travelling on a budget, don’t worry too much: at the other end of the price scale, there are also plenty of hostels, B&B’s and guesthouses. For as little as £11 per night, you can stay at the Villa Osumare. A ten-room guest house, this is far from slumming it. Located on the western seashore, it boasts a tropical garden setting and breakfast is included. It’s worth bearing in mind that there’s a four-night minimum stay here and payments are cash only.
Personally, I prefer to go mid-range in Mauritius. For example, the Ocean Beach Hotel & Spa close to the Blue Water Diving Center and La Croisette represents the perfect balance of luxury and value for money. Rooms start from £71 per night and the 3-star property offers a poolside bar, deli, swimming pools and high speed internet.
Regardless of where you choose to stay, just bear in mind that with all the splendid beaches and sceneries out there, most modern comfort available inside your hotel might just make very little difference.
